![]() After the painfull experence i had getting Compiz-fusion to work with Kubuntu 7.04 (Fiesty fawn), I was glad to hear that the next full release would install Compiz-fusion by default if your hardware would run it, and fall back gracefully if it not. So there i was between then and the 18th October, twiddling my thumbs waiting for the torrents to hit the trackers.
Forgive me if im missing something, but after formating and instaling its no where to be seen. I Knew my graphics card was capable of running it as i had CF working on Fiesty, It was in the repositories but not installed. When I did install it it didnt work, xgl wasn't there and nor did the proprietary Nvidia driver that apt downloaded, work with xgl.
So here is what i had to do for a manual install...
Firstly if you have tried to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers from the Ubuntu repositories, remove it. 1: Open your xorg.conf and change the driver back to nv.
2: Remove nvidia-glx by opening a terminal window and running (If you have su privlages).
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx - -purge
3: Press Ctrl+Alt+backspace to restart the X server, which should now be using the free nv driver.
4: Next stop Alberto Milone’s site and download Envy with Firefox and let GDebi install it and resolve the 7 dependencies it needs to meet. Envy is an alternative installer for Nvidia and Ati graphics card drivers writen in Python.
When GDebi is finished its stuff Envy is found in Applications > System Tools > Envy
Open this and select the option for your graphics card manufacture as ive a Nvidia Geforce 5200fx i chose to install the Nvidia driver unlike the diagram below.
Instructions for terminal based version for those without an x server can be found on Alberto's website. more to come today!
